Trump will not risk American lives by any means.
President Donald Trump has moved quickly to restore order and strengthen national security after a horrifying ambush in Washington, D.C. left two National Guard members in critical condition.
Following the attack — which took place just blocks from the White House — Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that the president has formally requested 500 additional National Guard troops to immediately reinforce the capital.
Hegseth stressed that this latest deployment is part of Trump’s broader promise to bring law, order, and stability back to America’s cities.
“We will never back down. We will secure our capital. We will secure our cities,” Hegseth said. “President Trump has directed me to call for 500 more Guardsmen for Washington, D.C. This will only strengthen our historic progress in reducing crime.”
According to Pentagon officials, around 2,100 National Guard troops are currently on duty in the city. That number includes roughly 900 from the D.C. National Guard and more than 1,200 serving from supporting states.
A Brutal, Targeted Ambush in Broad Daylight
Authorities say the shooting was a “targeted ambush” against uniformed service members. The attack happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. near Farragut Square, one of the busiest retail and restaurant corridors in the city.
DC Police Chief Jeff Carroll detailed how the gunman suddenly emerged from around a corner, raised a firearm, and opened fire on National Guardsmen performing high-visibility patrols.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey (R-WV) confirmed that the two victims — both members of West Virginia’s National Guard — are in critical condition.
The shooter’s identity has not yet been released, but police say one suspect is in custody and there are no indications of additional attackers.
Multiple agencies, including the FBI, ATF, Secret Service, and Metro Police, immediately responded to the scene.
Trump Responds: “The Animal Will Pay a Very Steep Price”
President Trump, who was in Florida at the time of the attack, issued a strong statement vowing consequences for the perpetrator and promising continued action to protect the nation’s capital.
The president noted that his troop deployment began on August 11 as part of a larger effort to reduce violent crime in Washington. That deployment followed several disturbing incidents, including the widely reported assault on former Department of Government Efficiency employee Edward Coristine — known publicly as “Big Balls” — after he intervened in a carjacking. Coristine now works for the Social Security Administration.
Trump has repeatedly emphasized that D.C.’s historic drop in crime is the direct result of his crackdown on lawlessness, increased patrols, and tighter federal-state coordination.
Legal Battles Intensify as Trump’s Security Push Expands
Even as violent crime declines under Trump’s policies, political opposition in Washington continues. The National Guard’s presence has been challenged by D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who filed a lawsuit claiming the president lacked authority to deploy the Guard without local approval.
Although a federal judge issued a ruling ordering the withdrawal of troops, the judge also placed a hold on the order until December 11, giving the Trump administration time to appeal.
Because of federal law, National Guard members cannot make arrests under the Posse Comitatus Act — a limitation many conservatives say ties the hands of those trying to restore order.
Trump previously tried to deploy troops to cities like Portland, Chicago, and Memphis, but those efforts were stalled in court despite rising public demand for stronger crime-fighting measures.
A Nation Watching Closely
With violence once again striking the nation’s capital, millions of Americans are rallying behind President Trump’s decision to increase troop presence and reinforce national security. Many see this as the latest example of why the administration’s tougher stance on crime remains critical as the country moves toward the high-stakes 2026 midterms.
As the investigation continues, the president has made it clear that Washington, D.C. — and the entire nation — will not be abandoned to chaos.
