The death of longtime South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham prompted an outpouring of condolences from Republican leaders and world figures, but it also sparked sharp criticism from several progressive commentators on social media.

Graham’s office announced Sunday that the 71-year-old Republican senator died Saturday evening following what it described as a “brief and sudden illness.” As news of his passing spread, political leaders remembered his decades of public service, while some of his critics used the moment to condemn his political legacy.

The mixed reactions quickly became one of the most discussed political stories online.

Progressive Commentators Draw Attention

Several left-leaning media personalities posted blunt responses after Graham’s death was announced.

Ana Kasparian, co-host and executive producer of The Young Turks, responded on X with a brief message that read, “Good riddance.”

Another political commentator posted the same two-word response, generating criticism from users who argued that political differences should not outweigh respect following a person’s death.

The Young Turks co-founder Cenk Uygur also commented on social media, using satire to criticize Graham’s longtime support for an interventionist U.S. foreign policy. His post imagined the senator continuing to advocate for military action in the afterlife, referencing Greek mythology to make the point.

Former MSNBC analyst and Lincoln Project co-founder Steve Schmidt published a lengthy statement criticizing Graham’s political career, arguing that the South Carolina senator had sacrificed principle in pursuit of power and influence.

Popular left-wing streamer Hasan Piker also drew attention after reacting with a brief mocking comment to an online tribute recognizing Graham’s support for Israel.

The social media responses highlighted the deep political divisions that continue to shape public debate in the United States.

President Trump Leads Tributes

While critics focused on Graham’s political record, many Republican leaders remembered him as a dedicated public servant who spent decades representing South Carolina.

President Donald Trump paid tribute on Truth Social, describing Graham as “a true American Patriot” who never stopped working for the country.

“Lindsey will be greatly missed!!!” Trump wrote. “So sad!”

Trump’s message was one of many condolences offered by Republican officials and longtime friends of the senator.

Republican Leaders Honor Graham’s Service

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir remembered Graham as one of Israel’s strongest allies in Washington, praising his longstanding commitment to the country’s security.

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina reflected on both Graham’s public service and their personal friendship.

“South Carolina lost a statesman and I’ve lost a friend,” Scott said. He added that Graham consistently put faith, family and South Carolina first throughout his years in office.

Rep. Nancy Mace also honored the late senator, acknowledging that although they sometimes disagreed on policy, Graham’s dedication to his state was never in question.

Mace acknowledged that she and Graham often found themselves on opposite sides of issues, but said his commitment to South Carolina and his determination were never in doubt. She also encouraged Americans to keep Graham’s family, friends, and loved ones in their prayers during this difficult period.

A Career Spanning More Than Three Decades

Graham represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate beginning in 2003 after serving four terms in the House of Representatives.

Prior to his congressional career, Graham served as a lawyer in the U.S. Air Force. He later retired with the rank of colonel after completing more than three decades of military service.

During his years in the Senate, Graham emerged as a prominent Republican spokesman on defense, national security, and international affairs. He consistently supported a powerful U.S. military and worked to strengthen America’s partnerships with allies around the world.

Just days before his death, Graham had returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with government officials and visited a facility involved in drone production. He had also begun campaigning for another term in the Senate.

Political Divide Remains on Display

The response to Graham’s passing reflected the sharp political divisions that continue to define American politics.

Supporters remembered him as a patriotic public servant who devoted decades to military service and elected office, while many critics pointed to policy disagreements that made him a polarizing figure throughout his career.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the United States and around the world, Graham leaves behind a legacy that will remain a significant part of South Carolina politics and the broader national conversation for years to come.
