Trump is not playing games.
Illinois is igniting national outrage after new revelations that state leaders are releasing violent criminal illegal aliens, even when federal immigration detainers are active and waiting. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), these decisions are endangering American families and undermining President Trump’s nationwide push for stronger border security and law-and-order policies.
In a letter shared with Fox News Digital, Todd Lyons—the ICE official performing the duties of director—warned that Illinois is currently detaining “tens of thousands of criminal illegal aliens,” including offenders tied to murder, rape, child exploitation, armed robbery, and other violent crimes. Despite this, the state continues to treat ICE detainers as optional rather than essential.
Lyons stated plainly that these individuals “should be swiftly removed from the United States and not be returned to our streets to wreak havoc on law-abiding citizens.”
Violent Criminals Released Back Into Communities
ICE data reveals a disturbing pattern:
Since January 2025, Illinois has released 1,768 criminal illegal aliens who had active ICE detainers. Their criminal histories include:
- Homicide and attempted murder
- Weapons offenses
- Predatory sexual assault
- Aggravated battery and assault
- Burglary and violent robbery
Another 4,015 offenders with pending detainers are still being held in state or local custody, including individuals associated with 51 homicides and more than 800 sexual-predatory crimes. ICE stresses that these cases involve some of the most dangerous repeat offenders in the country.
Each release forces ICE to conduct time-consuming fugitive operations simply to recapture individuals who should have been transferred directly into federal custody.
Examples Show the Real Public-Safety Threat
ICE also highlighted several alarming cases where local agencies released offenders without notifying federal authorities:
- Victor Manuel Mendoza-Garcia — found guilty on three separate aggravated kidnapping charges
- Juan Morales Martinez — connected to a deadly vehicular incident
- Amilcar Waldo Gonzalez-Jimenez — convicted on two counts involving criminal sexual assault
Several other individuals who were released had convictions for child abduction, predatory sexual offenses against minors, and attempted murder—serious crimes that would typically warrant immediate federal custody and deportation.
Some of these individuals were eventually taken back into custody or removed from the country, but only after ICE had to divert significant personnel and resources—efforts that could have been used to protect American communities rather than compensating for state-level missteps.
ICE: Illinois Sanctuary Policies Are Putting Americans in Danger
Lyons cautioned that Illinois’ ongoing decision to ignore ICE detainers is directly putting communities at risk. He further pressed state officials on whether they intend to keep releasing dangerous offenders who could once again return to Illinois neighborhoods.
At a time when President Trump is calling for strong national borders, criminal alien removal, and mandatory cooperation with ICE, Illinois appears determined to move in the opposite direction—placing politics above public safety and leaving American families to deal with the fallout.
For many voters, the situation reinforces exactly why President Trump continues to push for tough immigration enforcement, ending sanctuary policies, and holding states accountable when they refuse to protect their own citizens.
