Things could get even worse.

In a surprising turn of events, China has just warned the United States and specifically House Speaker Nancy Pelosi against going to visit Taiwan.

According to Newsmax, China warned that they would take very strong measured against the United State if Speaker Pelosi went to Taiwan and that it would permanently damage their relationship.

China considers Taiwan as their own territory while Taiwan considers itself as an independent nation with their own democracy.

While Speaker Pelosi has no officially said she would visit Taiwan, Japanese and Taiwanese media sources claimed that she would travel there after she leaves Japan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, “If the United States insists on having its own way, China will take strong measures in response to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. All possible consequences that arise from this will completely be borne by the U.S. side.”

In 1997, Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich visited Taiwan and met with then-President Lee Teng-hui.
