McConnell has always been a RINO.
In a recent interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) opened up about his complex relationship with former President Donald Trump, addressing past reports of heated disagreements between the two. When asked about rumors of “screaming matches” during Trump’s first term, McConnell laughed and acknowledged that their relationship was indeed candid, though he did not dwell on any dramatic conflicts.
The conversation shifted to Trump’s public criticism of McConnell, with the former president calling him a “sullen … unsmiling political hack.” McConnell, known for his measured approach, chose not to retaliate. Instead, he took the high road, opting to move past Trump’s remarks without offering a direct rebuttal. When questioned about comments in a biography where he had referred to Trump as “nasty” and a “sleazeball,” McConnell confirmed the remarks, but made it clear they were private conversations.
On the subject of the January 6th Capitol riot, McConnell made his disapproval clear, calling the day’s events an “insurrection.” He expressed his strong feelings about the attack and criticized Trump’s actions in the aftermath, specifically pointing out his decision to pardon individuals involved in the violence. “I think pardoning people who’ve been convicted is a mistake,” McConnell said, expressing his disappointment with the president’s handling of the situation.
When asked whether he had spoken to Trump recently, McConnell admitted it had been quite some time since their last conversation, further emphasizing the distance between the two figures. As a seasoned political leader, McConnell continues to prioritize principle over party loyalty, even when it comes to the controversial actions of a former Republican president.
