Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making headlines over her dating life after being asked a question few probably expected: Would the progressive New York Democrat ever date a conservative?
Her response offered Republicans a pretty clear answer.
Ocasio-Cortez laughed when the possibility was raised before admitting that she would “probably not” date a conservative.
The exchange comes after reports that Ocasio-Cortez and longtime fiancé Riley Roberts ended their engagement, putting renewed attention on the Democratic congresswoman’s personal life.
But despite the headline-grabbing question, there is currently no indication that Ocasio-Cortez has a new Republican boyfriend.
Instead, the viral conversation centered on whether one of Washington’s best-known progressives could ever find romance across the political aisle.
AOC Asked If She Would Date A Conservative
The question came during an encounter near Capitol Hill with TMZ DC managing editor Charlie Cotton.
Cotton asked Ocasio-Cortez directly whether dating a conservative was something she would ever consider.
The question immediately drew laughter from the “Squad” member.
After considering it briefly, Ocasio-Cortez said the answer was “probably not.”
She then explained why political differences could become an obstacle in a serious relationship.
For Ocasio-Cortez, politics isn’t simply about whether someone checks the Republican or Democratic box on Election Day. She indicated that political beliefs can be connected to a person’s underlying principles.
According to the congresswoman, being on the same page when it comes to important values matters greatly in a relationship.
Ocasio-Cortez wasn’t condemning couples who manage to make relationships work despite political disagreements. She acknowledged that some people are perfectly capable of separating politics from romance.
She simply suggested that approach probably wouldn’t work for her.

Political Differences Becoming More Personal
The exchange highlights a larger cultural change in America.
There was a time when Republicans and Democrats could disagree fiercely about elections and government policy while still maintaining close friendships, marriages and family relationships.
Political divisions today can feel much more personal.
Issues involving the economy, taxes, immigration, crime, education, abortion and the role of government can reflect dramatically different beliefs about the direction of the country.
For Ocasio-Cortez, those political disagreements apparently could make finding common ground with a conservative romantic partner difficult.
But Washington has produced at least one famous example proving that political opposites can build a lasting marriage.
James Carville And Mary Matalin Made It Work
Democratic political strategist James Carville and Republican consultant Mary Matalin have spent decades demonstrating that political differences don’t necessarily have to destroy a relationship.
Carville became nationally known for helping Bill Clinton win the White House, while Matalin established herself as a prominent Republican political strategist.
Their opposing politics didn’t prevent them from getting married and building a life together.
Carville has previously criticized the growing tendency to treat someone’s political affiliation as a requirement for dating.
He has even joked about expanding his own dating prospects by becoming willing to date Republican women.
Behind the humor was a straightforward message: Americans don’t necessarily have to agree politically to get along personally.
Carville Had Tough Advice For Young Progressives
Carville has also offered some pointed advice for younger progressives who refuse to consider relationships with people holding different political views.
The longtime Democratic strategist argued that progressives should become more pragmatic and move away from what he described as a sense of “moral superiority.”
His argument went beyond dating.
Carville suggested that the same willingness to compromise and understand people with different views could also make Democrats more successful in elections.

Based on her own answer, conservatives probably shouldn’t count on it.
Ocasio-Cortez made clear that sharing important values would be a major consideration when choosing a romantic partner, and she apparently believes a conservative would be unlikely to meet that standard.
