Is Pence taunting Trump again?
In a revealing interview aired Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, former Vice President Mike Pence offered rare criticism of President Donald Trump’s recent trip to the Middle East—while ultimately praising the trip’s economic impact for the American people.
“I’ve never supported American presidents speaking critically about our country on foreign soil,” Pence told host Kristen Welker. “Hearing President Trump challenge America’s war on terror while standing in Saudi Arabia—where 15 of the 9/11 attackers were from—was troubling to many of us who served.”
Trump’s Middle East Tour Delivers Major Wins for American Jobs
President Trump’s high-profile tour through Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates focused on strengthening business ties and reviving U.S. manufacturing. One of the trip’s biggest victories came in the form of a record-breaking Boeing deal, expected to create thousands of jobs for American workers.
“This was a major economic win,” Pence acknowledged. “The president secured financial commitments in all three countries, including historic contracts that will support American companies and their workers.”
Trump Slams Nation-Building, Praises Middle Eastern Sovereignty
In a powerful and unapologetic speech delivered in Riyadh, President Trump sharply criticized past administrations for endless wars and reckless spending abroad.
“The gleaming marvels of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi weren’t built by globalist think tanks or failed nation-builders,” Trump said. “They were built by the people of this region, forging their own destinies.”
Trump emphasized the importance of sovereignty, self-determination, and putting America First—a theme that has consistently resonated with his conservative base.
Controversy Over 9/11 and Crown Prince Praise
Some family members of 9/11 victims criticized Trump’s remarks, especially given Saudi Arabia’s alleged links to the 2001 terror attacks. While the Saudi government denies involvement, critics pointed to the symbolism of delivering such a speech in the Kingdom.
President Trump also offered praise for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, calling him “an incredible man” and “a leader who’s transforming his country.”
Pence Keeps It Civil—But Draws a Line
While Pence was measured in his comments, his words reflect lingering tension from the post-2020 fallout between the two men. Still, Pence made clear that the economic outcomes of the trip were undeniably positive.
“It’s a good day when American workers win,” Pence concluded.
