The GOP is dealing with another traitor now.
In a political bombshell, President Donald Trump is tearing into Georgia’s former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan after the once-prominent Republican officially defected to the Democratic Party. The move comes just months after Duncan was expelled from the Georgia GOP for endorsing Democrats and publicly attacking Trump.
Duncan, who served from 2019 to 2023, has been one of Trump’s loudest critics in Georgia politics. On Tuesday, he published an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution announcing he was now a Democrat, citing policy disagreements and his personal opposition to Trump’s leadership.
Trump didn’t hold back. In a fiery Truth Social post early Friday, the president called Duncan a “total loser” and celebrated his departure from the GOP.
Trump wrote, “Geoff Duncan, the failed former lieutenant governor of Georgia, was useless in office — all talk, no results, and always whining. We were done with him in the Republican Party, and now I hear he’s joined the Democrats. Good riddance, Geoff. You’ll never win anything!”
This is not the first time Trump has gone after Duncan. Back in August 2024, Trump called him “a bum” and “unelectable,” urging Georgia Republicans to throw him out of the party. The president also blasted Duncan for taking a low-paying role with “Fake News CNN,” where, according to Trump, his sole mission was to attack the America First agenda.
Duncan’s split from the GOP reportedly began before the 2020 presidential election and the events of January 6, 2021. In his op-ed, he claimed there was no single date when his “political heart changed,” but insisted he could no longer align with Republican values.
The Georgia Republican Party formally expelled Duncan in January 2024 after he endorsed Joe Biden’s re-election bid and later backed Kamala Harris when Biden dropped out. GOP Chair Josh McKoon ordered him to stop publicly using his Republican title, accusing him of using it on CNN to undermine the party from within.
For many conservatives, Duncan’s party switch is the ultimate betrayal — proof that he was never truly loyal to Republican principles. Trump supporters say his defection only strengthens the president’s position ahead of the 2026 midterms, as the GOP works to purge what they see as disloyal, establishment insiders.
With Georgia playing a critical role in the national political landscape, the Trump-Duncan feud is likely far from over — and it could have major implications for the Republican Party’s future in the state.
