Trump wants answers now!
The U.S. Department of Education (DoEd) has initiated investigations into five universities following the widespread reports of antisemitism on campuses after the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. This terrorist attack led to an Israeli military response, sparking anti-Israel protests at numerous American colleges. At many of these universities, protests continued without swift intervention, and Columbia University even canceled its main commencement ceremony due to safety issues.
In response to the situation, the Trump administration has criticized the Biden administration’s handling of campus antisemitism, calling their actions ineffective. The Department of Education has now launched investigations into five institutions where antisemitic incidents have been reported. These universities include Columbia University, Northwestern University, Portland State University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights at the DoEd, expressed dissatisfaction with the previous administration’s failure to hold universities accountable. “Too many schools have allowed antisemitic harassment to flourish and undermined the safety of Jewish students,” Trainor stated. He went on to warn that under the current administration, universities will be held to higher standards, with zero tolerance for antisemitism and other forms of hate on campuses.
The investigation follows reports that the Trump administration was considering deporting foreign students who participated in anti-Jewish protests. Several universities, including Northwestern, Portland State, and the University of Minnesota, have publicly committed to cooperating with the investigation and reiterated their dedication to creating a safe, inclusive environment on their campuses. These schools stressed that the investigation was part of a broader initiative led by the new administration.
Columbia University, which receives significant federal funding, has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the investigation. However, the university had already been under scrutiny by Congress, which questioned whether Columbia was doing enough to ensure the safety and well-being of all its students. This investigation represents the Trump administration’s commitment to tackling antisemitism and protecting the rights of Jewish students in higher education.
