Newsom Evacuates California

Here’s what Newsom is leaving.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is once again leaving the state for a series of political events, fueling renewed debate over whether the Democrat is spending more time building a national profile than addressing issues at home.

Newsom’s latest trip begins in Las Vegas, where he is scheduled to campaign for Democratic candidates before expanding his efforts across California and several Southern states ahead of the November midterm elections. While his political team says the travel is aimed at helping Democrats win key races, Republican critics argue the governor is increasingly focused on positioning himself for a possible 2028 presidential campaign.

Republican Leaders Question Newsom’s Priorities

California Republican Party Chairwoman Corrin Rankin criticized Newsom’s latest trip, saying California voters deserve a governor who is focused on the state’s ongoing challenges rather than national politics.

Rankin argued that Newsom’s frequent travel reflects an effort to strengthen his own political future while California continues to face concerns over crime, homelessness, affordability and the high cost of living.

She also referenced ongoing federal investigations involving Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, saying the governor should focus on serving Californians instead of expanding his national political profile.

Republican lawmakers in the California Assembly also weighed in on social media, questioning why Newsom is promoting California as a model for the nation while many residents continue relocating to neighboring Nevada.

Newsom Team Says Trip Supports Democrats

Newsom’s political organization says the governor’s travel is designed to help Democratic candidates compete in important races while opposing President Donald Trump’s agenda.

According to his team, Newsom will participate in a Nevada Democratic Party canvassing event in the Las Vegas area before attending a fundraiser for Democratic Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is running for governor.

The governor is also expected to meet with Rep. Steven Horsford and other Democratic leaders during the visit.

Later this summer, Newsom plans to campaign in several competitive California congressional districts before traveling to additional states across the South to support Democratic candidates.

Millions Raised for Democratic Candidates

Newsom’s campaign organization says it has raised more than $5.2 million this election cycle through its nationwide small-dollar fundraising network.

His political team also said a recent fundraising email generated more than $120,000 for Democratic congressional candidates Richard Pan, Marni von Wilpert and Randy Villegas following California’s latest redistricting changes.

Long List of Out-of-State Trips

The Nevada visit continues a year marked by frequent travel outside California.

Earlier this year, Newsom toured the country promoting his memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, making appearances in New York, Boston, Nashville, Atlanta, Austin, South Carolina and Las Vegas.

Political committees supporting Newsom reportedly spent more than $1.5 million purchasing copies of the book while also paying for campaign-style events connected to the tour.

Those committees reportedly held roughly $14.5 million this spring, giving the governor significant financial resources as speculation grows about his national political future.

International Travel Adds to National Profile

Newsom has also traveled overseas this year, attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Munich Security Conference in Germany and visiting London, where he announced a clean-energy partnership with the United Kingdom.

Supporters say the international trips helped promote California’s economic interests, while critics argue they further demonstrate the governor’s growing focus beyond the state.

Time Away From California Draws Scrutiny

According to an analysis by the Press Democrat, Newsom made 45 out-of-state trips between the beginning of 2023 and March of this year, spending roughly 229 days away from California during that period.

The governor’s office has said those trips included official state business, political activities and personal travel.

Nevada has become a regular destination for Newsom because of its importance in Democratic presidential politics. This week’s visit marks his third trip to the state since March 2025.

2028 Presidential Speculation Continues

Although Gavin Newsom has repeatedly declined to say whether he plans to run for president, his increasingly national schedule continues to fuel speculation about a potential 2028 White House campaign.

Recent polling cited by The New York Times found Newsom trailing former Vice President Kamala Harris among potential Democratic presidential contenders.

As Newsom continues traveling across the country to campaign and raise money, Republicans are expected to keep questioning whether California’s governor is dedicating enough attention to the issues facing the nation’s most populous state, while Democrats argue his efforts are helping strengthen their party ahead of the midterm elections.
