The tax issue stemmed from Hunter’s controversial work at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Caputo even admits that the story would have been a “classic” piece, detailing how Biden’s son was financially entangled in a foreign scandal that could harm his father’s campaign. But instead of pursuing the story, Politico editors shelved it, sparking suspicions that the media was deliberately protecting Biden’s candidacy.
This was only the beginning. Fast-forward to October 2020, just weeks before the presidential election. The New York Post published an explosive report detailing Hunter Biden’s laptop and its troubling revelations about his overseas business dealings. But, rather than investigating these potential scandals, the media doubled down on denouncing the story as “Russian disinformation.” Politico, CNN, and other outlets refused to cover it, or worse, mocked those who dared to bring it up. Even social media giants like Twitter and Facebook censored the Post’s reporting, giving Democrats an unlevel playing field just before voters headed to the polls.
Despite mounting evidence, the Biden family’s financial dealings continued to be swept under the rug. Even now, as Hunter faces legal scrutiny, the mainstream media is slow to report, often downplaying the severity of the situation. Former Politico reporter Tara Palmeri admitted to facing significant resistance when trying to report on Hunter’s gun charge, suggesting that her editors were reluctant to publish anything that might hurt the Biden administration.
The efforts to protect Joe Biden haven’t been limited to his son’s troubles; they’ve extended to concerns about the president’s health. Media outlets like The New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC have repeatedly downplayed Biden’s mental and physical decline, even as public gaffes and awkward moments continue to raise questions. Biden’s age, which was already a concern during the 2020 campaign, became even more apparent as he struggled to keep up with the demanding schedule of a president. Yet, instead of addressing these legitimate concerns, the media sought to quash any discussion of his cognitive abilities, dismissing it as a partisan attack.
What’s even more troubling is how the mainstream media covered for Biden’s weaknesses during the 2024 campaign. After Biden’s disastrous CNN debate performance, the press refused to hold him accountable, with some even suggesting that conservatives were exploiting his age to attack him. As his cognitive decline became more noticeable, a narrative began to emerge that minimized the issue, with liberal media outlets defending him by pointing to his occasional “good days” and deflecting to right-wing “fake news” whenever his frailty was questioned.
This culture of denial has created a dangerous precedent, one where journalists are more concerned with protecting a politician’s image than fulfilling their duty to report the truth. And now, with the 2024 election around the corner, it’s clear that many in the media have been complicit in hiding Biden’s flaws, letting political bias guide their reporting. Even though they’ve been forced to acknowledge some of these issues, it’s clear that much of the media has allowed partisan loyalty to cloud their judgment. As we move forward, Americans deserve a media that prioritizes the truth over political convenience. It’s time for full accountability, not just for Biden, but for the media that has been covering for him all along.
