Democrats Pin New Crime On Trump

Democrats are escalating their attacks on President Donald Trump, this time leveling fresh allegations tied to his administration’s oversight of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D–R.I.) alleges that the Trump administration acted improperly after taking over management of the high-profile cultural institution earlier this year. The senator has opened an official investigation into the Kennedy Center during the tenure of Richard Grenell, who was appointed by President Trump in February.

According to Whitehouse, the administration’s early actions raised “serious concerns” about governance and spending. In comments to a foreign media outlet, the Rhode Island Democrat accused Trump officials of favoring political allies, granting special access to preferred organizations, and approving high-end accommodations and expenses.

President Trump has taken a direct role in the Kennedy Center since returning to office. In February, he removed several board members and appointed himself chairman. The board later voted to rename the building in Trump’s honor — a decision that triggered backlash from Democrats, members of the Kennedy family, and some in the entertainment industry.

Following the announcement, several artists canceled planned performances, citing political objections. Supporters of the move argue the reaction highlights growing intolerance toward conservative leadership within elite cultural institutions.

As part of his investigation, Whitehouse — who serves as an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board — sent a detailed letter to Grenell outlining alleged financial improprieties. The senator claims documents show contracts were directed toward individuals with ties to President Trump and that “tens of thousands of dollars” were spent on luxury hotels, upscale dining, and entertainment for staff and associates.

Whitehouse accused Grenell of disregarding long-standing financial safeguards and governance standards, calling the alleged conduct irresponsible and improper.

Grenell responded forcefully the same day, rejecting the claims as politically motivated and factually incorrect. He described Whitehouse’s letter as “partisan theater” and said the accusations distort the reality of the center’s finances.

Grenell stated that during his tenure, the Kennedy Center’s budget was stabilized after years of what he described as unchecked spending and financial disorder. He emphasized that his actions were focused on restoring fiscal discipline and accountability.

Conservatives say the episode fits a familiar pattern in Washington, where Democrats continue searching for new controversies to weaponize against President Trump, even as his administration pushes for oversight and reform of long-standing institutions.

As the inquiry continues, the dispute underscores how deeply political divisions now reach — extending even into America’s most iconic cultural organizations.
