GOP strategists are on high alert.
Republicans are growing increasingly concerned about a major political showdown in Texas that could reshape the national Senate map — and potentially give Democrats their first statewide victory in decades.
Veteran Republican strategist Karl Rove issued a warning this week that Democrats may see an unexpected opportunity if Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secures the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.
While Texas has long been considered solid Republican territory, Rove suggested that nominating the wrong candidate could open the door for a heavily funded Democratic challenge.
“Democrats haven’t won a Senate race here since 1988, and they haven’t won a statewide election since 1994,” Rove explained during an appearance on Fox News. “But many Democrats believe that if Republicans nominate a damaged candidate, they might finally be able to pull it off.”
Texas Senate Race Suddenly Becomes A National Battleground
The warning comes after Tuesday’s primary election, which set up a high-stakes runoff between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn.
The two Republicans will face off in a May runoff election that could determine the future of the seat — and potentially influence control of the U.S. Senate.
Political analysts say the race is already shaping up to be one of the most expensive and closely watched Senate battles in the country.
Trump Holds The Key To The Race
One of the biggest questions looming over the contest is President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
So far, Trump has remained neutral in the Republican primary, but he has made it clear that a decision is coming soon.
Trump also suggested that once he announces his endorsement, he may ask the candidate he does not support to step aside to avoid a prolonged and costly primary fight.
However, Paxton has already indicated he plans to remain in the race regardless of Trump’s decision.
During a recent phone interview, Trump hinted that Paxton’s refusal to step aside could influence the direction of his endorsement.
“That is bad for him,” Trump said. “So maybe that leads me to go the other direction.”
Republican Leaders Push Trump To Back Cornyn
Several top Republican leaders in Washington are quietly urging President Trump to support Sen. John Cornyn, arguing that the party should avoid a bruising primary battle before the general election.
Among those reportedly concerned is Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who wants Republicans united as early as possible ahead of November.
Party strategists believe Cornyn would have little trouble defeating a Democrat in the general election.
Rove echoed that argument, saying Cornyn would likely win the race comfortably.
“Cornyn would win this race going away,” Rove said, adding that even some White House political advisers have reportedly made the same case.
Democrats See A Rare Opportunity In Texas
Despite Texas being a Republican stronghold for decades, Democrats are watching the Republican runoff very closely.
Rove warned that if Paxton becomes the nominee, Democrats could pour enormous resources into the state in hopes of flipping the seat.
“Paxton has so much baggage that Democrats could dump $100 million or even $200 million into Texas,” Rove said.
He compared the situation to the 2017 Alabama Senate race, when Democrats briefly captured a seat after Republicans nominated a controversial candidate.
High Stakes For Republicans In 2026
For Republicans, the Texas Senate race represents far more than just another election.
Texas has long been a cornerstone of the GOP’s national electoral strategy, and losing the seat would send shockwaves through American politics.
With President Trump expected to make his endorsement soon, the coming weeks could determine whether Republicans unite behind a candidate — or face a costly and divisive fight that could energize Democrats.
Either way, the Texas Senate race is quickly becoming one of the most important political battles in the country.
