Don’t believe her.

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed her respect for individuals who previously supported former President Trump but emphasized the crucial decision they must make regarding the future of democracy in the upcoming election. Pelosi, the former House Speaker, appeared on MSNBC’s “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell and discussed the message conveyed by Trump’s declaration of becoming a dictator on the first day of reentering office in 2024.

Pelosi asserted that such statements send a message to dictators and other nations, as they recognize elements in the former president that resonate with their own ambitions. While expressing respect for those who voted for Trump, Pelosi stressed the importance of a decision regarding democracy, the national flag, the Constitution, the well-being of future generations, and the establishment of a democratic state that serves as a global model.

Pelosi underlined the significance of the upcoming election, stating that nothing less than the preservation of democracy is at stake. She highlighted democracy as a core value that directly impacts everyday life, extending to personal choices at the kitchen table. Pelosi elaborated on the freedoms Americans enjoy, including decisions about reproductive options and educational pursuits, emphasizing that democracy enables individuals to be true to themselves in the country.

Pelosi’s remarks followed the conclusion of the fourth GOP debate, where four Republican candidates participated, notably without Trump, who had consistently skipped primary debates due to his significant lead in polls. During the interview, Pelosi also discussed her efforts on January 6 to reconvene the House and commended former Representative Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson.
