President Trump just saved taxpayers billions—and Newsom is furious.
On Wednesday, President Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced they are halting $4 billion in unused federal funds tied to California’s long-troubled high-speed rail project. This is a major blow to Governor Gavin Newsom and a big win for hardworking Americans tired of seeing their money wasted.
“To the law-abiding, tax-paying citizens of this country—I’m proud to say you’re no longer footing the bill for California’s ‘Train to Nowhere,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This disaster, championed by the totally incompetent Gavin Newscum, has drained public funds for years and produced nothing but excuses.”
The president’s post quickly went viral among conservatives and fiscal watchdogs, praising his decision to protect American tax dollars from what he called “one of the biggest boondoggles in U.S. history.”
California’s Train to Nowhere: Billions Wasted, Nothing Built
The rail line was originally approved by California voters in 2008 as a modern, high-speed link between San Francisco and Los Angeles, with later extensions planned for Sacramento and San Diego. At the time, the budget was projected at $33 billion with a 2020 completion goal.
Fast forward to today—and what do taxpayers have to show for it?
- No completed rail line
- Over $7 billion already spent
- Project scaled back to just 119 miles in the Central Valley
- Total projected cost now: $135 billion
Despite the staggering cost increases and missed deadlines, Newsom’s rail authority had the nerve to request another $8 billion from Joe Biden’s 2021 infrastructure package.
Federal Government Says Enough Is Enough
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) officially notified California’s rail authority this week that it is “de-obligating” the federal funding due to the state’s breach of contract and inability to complete the project.
FRA acting administrator Drew Feeley stated that California’s timeline to finish the project—already pushed back to 2033—is no longer realistic. The federal government now considers the project to be in default.
Secretary Duffy echoed Trump’s frustration, stating:
“This is a disaster of California’s own making. Newsom and his Democrat allies have mismanaged billions. Taxpayer money should go to projects that work—not progressive fantasies that never deliver.”
He confirmed the Department of Justice may also take legal steps to recover some of the federal dollars already spent.
Trump Administration Slams the Door on Future Funding
In February, Secretary Duffy began a review of the project after reports showed serious compliance failures. By June, a formal audit found the state had no viable path to finish the project and had violated terms of federal grant agreements.
This week, the Trump administration made it official:
No more federal funding for California’s high-speed rail.
President Trump celebrated the decision, stating:
“This was a massive waste. No more taxpayer dollars will be dumped into this Newscum Scam. It’s dead.”
Newsom Threatens Legal Battle—But Californians Are Still Paying the Price
In response, Governor Newsom hinted at legal action and claimed the project is already in the track-laying phase.
“We’re not backing down,” Newsom posted on X. “We’ve already completed major infrastructure and will explore every option to fight this illegal action.”
But the facts are hard to ignore: for over 15 years, California Democrats promised the impossible, spent freely, and delivered virtually nothing—leaving behind a cautionary tale of liberal mismanagement.
A Victory for Taxpayers and Fiscal Sanity
For many Americans, especially those over 50 who have seen government waste grow over the decades, this is a refreshing reminder that strong leadership still matters.
President Trump’s move sends a powerful message:
Your tax dollars are not a blank check. America comes first—not California’s political pet projects.
